Ο δάσκαλος μας εν τρόλ
This workshop’s main goal is to test out an alternative approach when it comes to text based acting. It combines exercises created by the facilitator Yorgos Kyriakou, Viewpoints, Jerzy Grotowski and ensemble building techniques. The greater part of this approach has been created and tested during the facilitator’s postgraduate studies in drama schools such as RADA, RCSSD and Rose Bruford as practice as research but also as the main argument of his final dissertation. As a reaction, or simply as a counterproposal to the conventional methods of getting to know and analyse the theatrical play, this approach is holistic, entirely collective, partially nonlinear, perhaps erratic and completely non analytical. Its fundamental assumption is that, the understanding of this text, and others potentially, happens when the body is in motion and not when the actor reads. If any analysis is to happen it will happen while things are happening and not through an a priori visualization or an a posteriori retrospection. The question posed here is this.
What would happen if the play is projected on a wall and the ensemble of actors get to know it, for the first time, by playing it and with it? By cold-playing it, however while being warmed up. What kind of warm up would enable them to do so? After a weeklong workshop and at least 5 of these run-throughs could this exercise be presented as a show itself? What are the benefits and the disadvantages of such an approach?
