BACCHAE
by Euripides
2012
"A great evil fell upon the city. I have heard about women abandoning their homes. They are following a new god, a certain Dionysus. In iron nets I shall trap them, tie them with wire and stop this obscenity."
From Euripides’ multifaceted tragedy, the MITOS theatre group turns its attention towards the figure of Pentheus. The new king of Thebes expresses the need for moderation and temperance. He ends up fearing the Stranger, violently reacting to all that he does not understand. The coming of god Dionysus invites us to accept the existence of instincts, reminding us the need to acknowledge our ritualistic nature.
