The Slaughter of the Century [24hour shot – poetry]

In Avgi Lilli’s second poetry collection The Slaughter of the Century time is imposed on human existence and conscience in a non-negotiable way, repaying its debt to us, bearing the potentials of love, mistake and memory. In the twenty-nine poems of this book, time is an intruder, a lover, an undesirable being; its extermination becomes an obsession of our mortal existence and our (re)birth is the fatal outcome. In The Slaughter of the Century, published by Thraca Publications (Athens, November 2018), the poems resemble fragments of a sleepless night, deeply existential and, at the same time, allusive or even boldly erotic.

In a project of deconstruction of the body of published texts and its re-composition, Two voices, cut and join words, sounds, poems of the book, producing a new artwork that occurs singularly in time. The new body of texts defies time in the same way time defies us: it appears momentarily but it does not repeat itself. Two voices compete in a violent and distillate speech processing. Two voices coexist in a dialogue on equal terms, forming a new poetic entity. The personal and collective experience of poetry is vividly represented through its sonic identity and performative utterance constructing a unique co-reading of singular work born before the viewer-reader: it appears momentarily but will never repeat itself. The Slaughter of the Century is a fact.
