Our Teacher’s a Troll

Dennis Kelly’s play “Our Teacher’s a Troll” has been translated entirely in Cypriot and its title reads as “Ο Δασκαλος μας εν Τρολ”. It is an imaginative and playful adventure, actually, it’s more like a narration of an adventure since what unravels in front of us is not the plot but its narration. Like a fairy-tale.

The play mainly unfolds in a primary school with its protagonists being The Twins. The Terrible Twins. After an intense Why? Why? Why? session the headteacher is being send to the Asylum and her replacement arrives being nothing else but a Troll. An Angry and authoritarian Troll! Teachers and students alike, suffer under his regime and naughty behaviour is being banned allround. The twins, after failing to get help by their mum, decide to plead for help elsewhere. Police officers, school inspectors, journalists, and politicians are being contacted, but all the like refuse to believe, or even pay attention to, the twins. Realising that they are all alone in their struggle they manage to learn to speak Troll and full of courage and rebeliousness they stand in front of the Troll, during the morning gathering, and they ask it Why?Why?Why?Why? With its political critique being deep and sharp this play manages to condemn many issues of contemporary democracy while being playful, witty and fun!
