CAUTION (….) [24hour shot –public space performance]

Based on Kafka’s extensive novel, The Metamorphosis, the performance, ‘CAUTION […]’ begins with a disruption from the Kafkaesque universe. The protagonist, permanently transformed into a cockroach, survives its reality and finds refuge in the sewage system. Having found a familiar environment, he chooses to observe the world he left behind and uses his previous experience among humans to start a dialogue with the passers-by.

The city’s public space, and in particular its negligible spots, such as pipes, garbage cans and sewers, are transformed into the theatrical scene chosen by Gregor Samsa to address the human kind once more. The hero is characterised by versatility, employing word improvisation, and readjusts his story according to the passersby and the area of the performance, rendering the work highly site-specific. The spoken word is combined with digital media for its transmission and reproduction, with sole aim to achieve an unexpected intervention.

Following his Athenian appearances, Gregor Samsa, informed by the experiences he gathered, arrives – almost by mistake – in Cyprus. After the initial shock, he regroups and begins to appeal to the passers-by once again: he talks about things that “were” “things that are” and criticizes the European order of things.

The work “CAUTION […]” takes place in the form of an unexpected intervention in the public space and requires public participation.
