the NEIGHBORHOOD of CINE VOLOS | festival

The Center of Performing Arts MITOS presents the first edition of the festival the NEIGHBORHOOD of CINE VOLOS on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of October in Limassol. The festival is a platform that tests interdisciplinary practices of social gathering and engagement, that empowers the creation of ‘meeting places’ through art and culture.

This year’s primary goal is to record and collect oral stories, photographs and other information related to the neighborhood. This material will contribute to the creation of an archive, the first Archive of Neighborhood Stories. MITOS, designing a sustainable strategy for the festival, has invited an interdisciplinary and inter-artistic network of partners to implement the pre-festival activities, the three-day festival and the post-festival activities.

The three-day festival THE NEIGHBORHOOD of CINE VOLOS is open to local residents and other visitors, includes free entertaining and participatory events, activates and connects the existing infrastructures such as: the park of Cine Volos, the Pattichio Αdults Day Care Center, the yard of Limassol’s Municipality Food Bank, the parking space of Sklavenitis supermarket.

This particular district was named after the cinema Cine Volos, built by the businessman Antonis Volos, (having as the architect Fotis Kolakidis), and operated with a winter and summer theater from 1950 to 1985. The first residents came mainly from Paphos and Limassol’s province and their arrival is linked to the industrial development of the Tsiflikoudia area. Later on the subsequent population arrivals had a refugee and immigrant origin, while today the regeneration of the western areas of the city and urban planning changes have brought new dynamics to the neighborhood and even more narratives.

The curator of the festival is Elena Agathokleous in co-design with Constantina Peter, Thodoris Kouros and Eleni Pashia. It is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Communication and Media Studies of CUT.
